Nostr Hack & Design

Hackathon Details

The road to Nostrica is paved by hackers and designers building the future of social! We have teamed up with the Nostr Design Community and Wolf NYC to bring you the first ever #NostrHack!

Unless you've been living under a rock, there's been a huge explosion of builders and designers paving the way for a new type of social experience on the web that's powered by an open protocol that might just have a chance of working! There's a big opportunity for anyone wanting to #BuildOnBitcoin and explore what this new kind of social web can look like when combined with the money of the internet.

Starting on Wednesday 10th of March to the 24th of March, we're welcoming makers from all over the world to join the FUN! That includes designers, developers, marketers, project managers, system admins, aunties, and even grandparents!

#NostrHack will have two tracks catering to builders and designers. The first track is for projects that are functional applications or developer tools. The second track is geared towards exploring design, artwork, and user experience around Nostr and the decentralized social web built on top of it.

FAQs

How are projects entered?

Entering a project to the tournament is very easy.

- If your project is already listed on Bolt.Fun, then you only need to go to the tournament "Projects" tab, click on "Add a project" button, select your project from the list, and that's it!

- If your project is NOT listed on bolt.fun yet, then you just need first to go the projects page & create a new project. Try to fill as much relevant info about your project as possible (description, screenshots, memebers, links, capabilities,...etc). The more info you put, the easier it is for the judges & the community to understand your project.
When it's listed, just go back to the "Projects" tab in the tournament page & click "Add a project".

How will projects in the design track be judged?

Coming soon.

When and how do we enter our projects?

You can enter your projects anytime between now and 24th of March. Entering a project can be done from the tournament "Projects" tab.

Can I submit a project that I hacked on during another event?

Makers can submit their projects from other hackathons, events, and meetups that are held between the dates of our own tournament. You can even find some of these hackathons and builder days on the tournament’s Events page. This allows makers to take advantage of IRL + online meetups, workshops, hackerspaces, inspirational weekend events, and more.

I'm a designer. Does my project have to be functional, or can it be a design/prototype?

We created a track especially for designers because user experience is a critical. If we want the protocol to reach mainstream adoption it's something we need to dive deep into.

We can't have people copying and pasting private keys into random web clients. Especially if those keys start to give access to Bitcoin wallets. It's even worse because it's not just intellectual property that can be lost; it's actual hard-earned Bitcoin!

What is a Nostr?

First rule of Nostr is don't talk about Nostr. Kidding Nostr is all about creating a new type of social network where you and the community are in control.

Check out nostr.how that explains it all in the guide.

What is the Nostr Design Community?

A community of designers and people who are interested in exploring user experiences for this cutting edge technology.

Learn more

How can I find other makers or projects to team up with?

You can see a list of makers who are open to connect in the tournament’s Makers tab. You can also search for projects that are looking to recruit members.

Does it provide value to the Nostr ecosystem?

2. 🚨 Innovation

Is it something we've seen before or does it bring something new and exciting to Nostr and beyond?

3. ⚡️ Bitcoin Integration & Scalability

Has the project used bitcoin/lightning? If so, how is it exposed to the user (interface / API), and how much consideration is given to key management.

4. 👁️ Transparency & Community (#BuildInPublic)

Encouraging makers to #BuildInPublic. Has the project’s team been transparent throughout their product design and development journey? Use the hashtag #NostrHackWeek when you post on Nostr or post directly to the BOLT.FUN feed.

5. ✅ Execution

Makers should focus on attention to detail. How well has the project been executed?

6. 🍒 Experience

Design can separate the excellent from the good. Taking into account user experience and developer experience, how good of an experience is provided to the target audience of the project?

7. 🔥 Je ne sais quoi

Does the project have that extra level of pizazz or coolness? Does it raise the bar

When does registration close?

On the 24th of March, before the registration closes you will have to post a "pitch" so judges can review the work you did during the hackathon. The pitch is your way of showing off your awesome work and conveying the idea to the pannel of judges so try to be sharp.
