Legends of Lightning ⚡️

Tournament details

Welcome to Legends of Lightning, a new online global tournament for makers to learn, connect, collaborate, and build innovative applications and tools with bitcoin and lightning.

From now until 7th December makers can accelerate their bitcoin projects through mentorship in design, development, and lightning integration.

Forming teams to hack on new or existing projects, makers can show off their progress, activity, and updates as they #BuildInPublic - competing for up to ~$60,000 (3 BTC) in prizes. BOLT🔩FUN has partnered with a number of meetups, hackathons, and workshops to provide participants the opportunity to brainstorm, design, build, and accelerate their projects over the course of the tournament.

Whether your project is an open-source public good, or a business that you’re looking to build, we want to encourage their longevity and continued development of projects. We’ve partnered up with funding specialists, including VCs firms like Fulgur Ventures, or grant platforms like Geyser and Open Sats to help you figure out your next steps.

At the end of the tournament, our judges will evaluate all projects entered. The top entries from our two tracks (Global Adoption and Building for Africa) will be selected for the semi-finals, where they will have the chance to refine and pitch their projects on demo day (6th December). We will then announce the individual track winners and grand champions!

Have you got what it takes to be the legend of lightning?

FAQs

When does the tournament start and end?

The tournament starts when project entries open on October 13th, 2022. 6 weeks later, on 24th November project entries will close, and our dedicated panels of judges will evaluate their specialised tracks, announcing a shortlist of finalists a few days later. On 6th December, these finalists will pitch their projects live, and our judges will announce the track winners + grand champions the next day. Here are the dates you’ll need to remember: <br /> <br /> 12th Oct - Project entries open <br /> 24th Nov - Project entries close <br /> 28th Nov - Judging panels announce track finalists <br /> 6th Dec - Finalists pitch their projects <br /> 7th Dec - Track winners + grand champions announced.

When and how do we enter our projects?

Makers can enter their projects anytime between 12th October - 24th November. When entering their projects, makers will be asked to select a specific project track. Every project entered into the Legends of Lightning tournament will be eligible for the grand champion prizes, no matter what track they choose.

What is the purpose of tracks?

The purpose of tracks is to help makers focus their projects over the course of the event, and to solve crucial challenges in bitcoin adoption either globally or in specific regions of the world. Each track will have a dedicated panel of judges, who will decide on a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Best Design award, totalling $10,000! All track winners will then go head to head for the grand champion prize pool! Makers can choose between two tracks: <br /> <br /> Global Adoption 🧡 <br /> This track will be aimed at solving issues surrounding the global adoption of bitcoin - with a particular focus towards usability, scalability, and product market fit. With this track, makers can let their imaginations run wild with either lightning or on-chain technology. <br /> <br /> Building for Africa 🌍 <br /> With an estimated population of ~1.4bn inhabitants, Africa has poised itself as ripe for bitcoin adoption. In partnership with the African Bitcoin Conference 22, this track seeks to encourage makers to build solutions that solve local challenges & increase bitcoin adoption in Africa.

How will projects be judged?

All projects will be judged and scored on the following criteria: <br /> <br /> 1). 🎯 Value Proposition <br /> Does the project have a product market fit? Does it provide value to the bitcoin ecosystem and beyond? <br /> <br /> 2). 🚨 Innovation <br /> Is it something we've seen before or does it bring something new and exciting to bitcoin and beyond? <br /> <br /> 3). ⚡️ Bitcoin Integration & Scalability <br /> Have they used bitcoin/lightning? If so, how many features? How well will this product scale for either local or global adoption? <br /> <br /> 4). 👁️ Transparency (#BuildInPublic) <br /> Encouraging makers to #BuildInPublic. Has the project’s team been transparent throughout their product design and development journey? <br /> <br /> 5). ✅ Execution <br /> Makers should focus on attention to detail. How well has the project been executed? <br /> <br /> 6). 🍒 UI/UX Design <br /> Design can separate the good from the bad. Taking into account both UI and UX, how well has the application or feature been designed? <br /> <br /> 7). 🔥 Je ne sais quoi <br /> Does the project have that extra level of pizazz or coolness? Does it raise the bar

Can I submit multiple projects?

Yes, makers can submit multiple projects. However we encourage makers to focus on quality rather than quantity.

Is it lightning only?

In short, no. Makers can build and enter projects that use on-chain technology. However, it is worth bearing in mind that judges will have a keen eye on the scalability of projects, which will naturally be in favor of lightning.

Can I submit a project that I hacked on during another event?

Makers can submit their projects from other hackathons, events, and meetups that are held between the dates of our own tournament. You can even find some of these hackathons and builder days on the tournament’s Events page. This allows makers to take advantage of IRL + online meetups, workshops, hackerspaces, inspirational weekend events, and more.

Does my project have to be functional, or can it be a design/prototype?

Makers can submit no-code projects, particularly design prototypes. Not being able to code should not dissuade you from entering the tournament, especially since we have some design awards on offer! However, the judging criteria will favor projects which have been successfully executed, including code.

How can I find other makers or projects to team up with?

You can see a list of makers who are open to connect in the tournament’s Makers tab. You can also search for projects that are looking to recruit members.

This is my first time hacking on bitcoin, is there any help?

We collected some awesome design, development, and project management resources here to get you up and running. You can also watch workshops and tutorials from BOLT🔩FUN’s previous ShockTheWeb⚡hackathons on our YouTube channel.

Not sure what to hack on?

Not sure where to get started? Need an idea to hack on? Not to worry, we’re collecting a list of great project ideas for you to look at shortly.

How does posting weekly updates affect judging?

We want to encourage people to build in public, and share their journey with the community. Projects which submit weekly reports showing their progress during the tournament will score highly in Transparency, one of the core judging criterias.

How can I #BuildInPublic?

Using BOLT🔩FUN Stories ✍️, makers can transparently document their project’s design, development, and management processes. This will help other makers learn from one another, decreasing essential onboarding and learning time, whilst inspiring more great bitcoin apps to be built and innovated on.
