What's up with this trend of AI startups creating personal assistant devices?

I've noticed more AI-driven personal assistant devices getting announced these days. A quick rundown:

  • HumaneAI: Founded by former Apple execs Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, raised $241 Million, device at $699 plus $24/month.

  • Tab AI Necklace: Developed by Avi Schiffmann, a Harvard dropout known for a popular COVID-19 tracking site and building activist tools, got $1.9M funding, early units being sold at $600 including a subscription service at $50/month. Avi states that Tab is "Her not Jarvis".

  • Rabbit r1: Priced at $199, no subscription, 10,000 units sold on day one.

Smartwatches have become mainstream over the years, but other wearables haven't quite followed. What's the reason for going down this direction anyway? Also what's your take on the long-term viability of these AI devices?
