After registering, a subsequent menu offers additional functionality like sending or receiving bitcoin and viewing balance and transaction history (users press the number on their feature phone corresponding to the desired menu option).
Machankura’s default Lightning address combines a user’s phone number and Machankura’s “@8333.mobi” domain (e.g., [email protected]). Users can also modify these addresses to conceal their phone numbers (e.g., [email protected]).
You now can receive funds using your Lightning address, or Onchain address, or Azteco Bitcoin Lightning Voucher. Azteco is Bitcoin for everyone. You can buy a top up voucher at your local store just like the ones you have. To redeem an Azteco Voucher, you don't need to have an account. This is just like SIM cards, using pay-as you-go. Simply enter your number. It is the same thing as topping up your mobile phone with a scratch card.

Kgothatso Ngako, a South African computer science researcher, stated that he started Machankura to make Bitcoin accessible to the internetless community within Africa. This will aid in accommodating almost two-thirds of the African community suffering from technological challenges. This initiative effectively allows anyone to access Bitcoin without depending on the kind of infrastructure available to them.
To send bitcoin with Machankura, first-time users simply dial a country code such as “*384*8333*1234#” for Malawi, or “*483*8333#” for Kenya. This brings up a registration menu that requests a five-digit PIN.
After registering, a subsequent menu offers additional functionality like sending or receiving bitcoin and viewing balance and transaction history (users press the number on their feature phone corresponding to the desired menu option).
If a customer chooses to send or receive bitcoin, Machankura has integrated one crucial feature that significantly improves the user experience – personalized Lightning addresses.
Instead of regular Lightning invoice addresses that can be over 200 alphanumeric characters long – well over the 182 USSD character limit – these personalized addresses are the length of a typical email handle. This makes them much easier to type out on feature phones with multi-press text entry.
