₿LOID ZINE 2212🇸🇻#0🇪🇸 Now available ONLINE and in PDF (for you to print it at home)💪
Well Darth… we did try, and we did get some results that we believe are worth to be shared. Firstly, just want to thank all the beautiful people like @Carlos, @Reyna and many more that actively contributed to the final result now published online 🙏. Secondly, to be just a few-days-experiment
—also definable as MVE
(minimum viable experiment)— has been an interesting journey until now and that's why we here to share it with you all.
🤓 What we learn
The contents of this zero-edition are maybe not that cool, not so original either… we needed some placeholders to test the magazine format and try to understand how this whole process can be somehow automagically automated by software.
We did face some practical issues on the way, especially after printing the PDF, and it will be interesting to see how (maybe the software) will be able to solve them all:
-
Design do not consider white margins left out by technical limitations on generic/domestic printers
-
Left over margins usually are also asymmetric, so hard to be precise defining/matching the folding line for both sides of the page
-
Image-heavy's pages increase ink usage and common 80g paper is not made for it
-
Do not use images as background, just complicate things… a lot! Focus on black ink on white paper background (keep it simple)
-
Folding paper increase white margin left/needed in the cover
-
QR codes too small and hard to scan when printed, especially on low-quality prints
-
It's confusing to understand which order the pages need to be printed, especially when printing in double side is an enabled setting in the print-panel options
Keeping these details apart, we did reach a great result for now… please continue reading 👇

🖨️ Printable PDF version
Hey, do you have a printer available? In case you feel brave enough and want to challenge yourself, try to download PDF version and follow the instructions below👇 to have a small zine in your hands:
The PDF file pages are organized in a way that you should be able to print the first two pages first (pages 1 and 2), take the printed sheets, flip them both and place them back in the printer to start printing the second two (pages 3 and 4). Depending on your printer, you need to play around a bit and consider:
-
PDF file is optimized to be printed in A4 paper size (8" x 9") to give you a final result in A5 size magazine
-
You can also scale it up and try printing in bigger formats like A3 and have a A4 size printed magazine
-
both sides should coincide in the middle of the page to allow the folding lines to match (you can check if they match looking at the printed sheet in backlight - placing a light source behind the paper and looking at it)
-
paper thickness: usually the common 80gsm paper sheets absorb a lot of ink, so if this is the paper you have, print in greyscale or check your printer settings to minimize ink usage.
-
You'll probably need to cut off white margins left over by your printer capabilities. We suggest cutting the upper and bottom margins before starting the cut/fold process below
- When you're done cutting and folding, you should cut the remaining white margins you now see on the right side of the nearly-finished printed magazine.
We understand the process is not that intuitive for everyone. The illustration above helps and, statistically speaking, do not bring the chance-to-make-mistakes to zero (as we wish). So we let you try it yourself, anyhow we do learn only by making mistakes… Go for it! It doesn't matter which printer you have or if you like/can print in colour or greyscale… just do it! Download the PDF
When you are done, you'll get something like this👇
In this case, we did use two different printers:
-
The greyscale version has been printed at the Hope House in El Zonte, it cost 1$ and needed four attempts before reaching this final result on 80gsm A4 paper sheets.
-
The colour version instead has been generously offered by Omar, a local El Zonte teacher that offered to print the magazine with the school's printer 🙏. Look's like he got it right with the first attempt (on 120gsm A4 paper sheets) and the printer magically matched the folding lines when printing both sides of the paper… Great job! 💪
We are so used to read contents in our screens that we forget how enjoyable it can be to take a break, breath, and smell the scent of a printed magazine. Touch it and take the time to go through it, page after page, absorbing the knowledge that someone else, somewhere in the universe, is willing to share with you. -- Anonymous Writer
