  • What is your project?

Taro opens up incredible new use cases and the potential to bring more individuals into Bitcoin than ever before. But there’s a huge problem – whether you agree with it or not, taking self-custody is simply not easy enough for the vast majority of individuals. Even despite all the chaos of late, there is still approximately 12.5% of circulating bitcoin supply on exchanges. We’ve seen this hesitancy towards self-custody proven out time and time again in focus groups and other consumer research as well. Self-custody should be a non-negotiable yet is oftentimes inverse to usability, and with Taro opening up the possibility for new types of assets, there is a risk of this becoming an even more complex challenge. Until now.

Introducing Joltz, a community-built Taro-enabled lightning wallet that enables users to receive, self-custody, and send assets all without needing to manually document a seed phrase or even download an app of any kind. Joltz is the very first wallet we’re aware of that leverages App Clips & Instant Apps for the most seamless onboarding possible. Users can receive, self-custody, and send bitcoin and Taro assets with secure and automated backups written to your device’s Keychain. Interact with bitcoin and Taro assets in no more than 2 taps – usability and self-custody is no longer a trade-off.

  • Who built it (team) and how? What specs, languages, and tools did you use?

We’ve built this functioning prototype out in the open with contributions from a range of individuals, including Bitcoin developers and designers.  We’re writing the interface in React and Capacitor powered by LND and Go behind the scenes.

We're using iOS App Clips and Android Instant Apps in order to deliver the seamless user experience of getting your very own non-custodial wallet without even having to install the full app. The mobile app is functional thus far in a local environment but we must continue building a bit more functionality into the app not only because we have to/need to but also in order to get the mobile app in the App Store and to test internally with Test Flight, this functionality must be there so we can pass Apple/Google app reviews. We estimate we have another 1.5 months worth of work in order to accomplish all the remaining tasks that can get us through and live in the app stores.

  • What are the next steps on your project’s roadmap?

As next steps, we want to polish up the core functionality and get this into the hands of a small batch of early users for alpha testing and bug hunting on testnet.  The code will likely be made available over GitHub, and other teams or individuals can contribute and build on top of what we’ve started. Our first real-world implementation of Joltz will be as a non-custodial wallet option for our Bitcoin rewards company Trubit.

Trubit is leading the way in conceiving of how Taro collectibles could be used as brand loyalty assets to mirror what brands like Starbucks have recently built out. In September, Starbucks announced their Odyssey Initiative which incorporates loyalty badges and other digital assets built on Polygon into their company’s world-class loyalty program. We believe there should be a Bitcoin competitor in this ring as a major new conduit to attract users to Bitcoin. This can be an amazing opportunity not just for Bitcoin adoption but also non-custodial Taro assets via Joltz.
