To date there have been several attempt to add monetization via cryptocurrency to PeerTube. Most have suffered from complexity and obscure coinage. There are also many attempts out there to monetize video content in general with lightning. They tend to work with paywalls and other outdated methods of monetization. The Value for Value ethic that has worked so well in the Podcasting 2.0 space is a perfect fit for video as well. This plugin will merge the self-hosted p2p video of PeerTube with the energy of V4V.
Should be ready for Beta 1 release before the end of the week. Creators can join the test and get paid simply by putting their lightning address in the description or support section of their channel. Viewers with a WebLN compatible browser such as Alby or Joulle will be able to stream Satoshis or send tips with a comment.
Beta 2 will incorporate all the bugfixes and feature enhancements found during the first beta, as well as allowing wallet integration with accounts for environments where a browser plugin isn't an option. Thinking of using this as an entry in the legends of lightning tournament.
How was it built? 🛠
Started with the PeerTube Plugin template then added a bunch of typing and googling. The guys at getalby have been extremely helpful and welcoming with getting this up and working, not to mention all the work they've done developing the ecosystem.
Blockers & Issues ✋
I'm much better at backend than front end, so getting it even minimally aesthetically pleasing has been a challenge.
