Introducing BTCMap.org 🚀
Product feature/name 🚀
BTCMap.org enables Bitcoiners to easily find places to spend sats anywhere on the planet.
Problems & Solutions 🚨
There have been many attempts to create a 'Bitcoin map' in the past, but non have them have really stuck. They have been mired with sh!tcoins and/or flooded with low signal locations like ATMs.
The merchant landscape has also changed with the introduction of the Lightning Network ⚡️. This makes bitcoin much more appealing to merchants, especially with services from the likes of Coinos, Galoy and CoinCorner that manage the whole process, providing liquidity and fiat exchange.
Why is BTCMap.org different?
We use OpenStreetMap (OSM) to properly tag merchants with an updated set of tags that cater for the Lightning Network. Merchants have previously been tagged in OSM, but this was done in bulk back in 2014 from poor quality sources without broad community engagement.
Aside from the apps and the data, BTCMap.org is building a global army of Shadowy Supertaggers and Communities that are taking on ownership of what is ultimately their data. For the plebs, by the plebs.
Of course, our apps and the underlying data are free and open source.
How is it being built? 🛠
