How might we best onboard makers?

BOLT.FUN Onboarding flow is pretty non-existent. Makers log in, with either lightning, email or nostr code. But what happens then? We want to create a good onboarding experience for all makers, no matter the tech knowledge or background. In the first contact with our community, we want makers to understand our mission. We ended up writing a manifesto to show what we stand by going forward in this new phase.

Identifying current challenges

  1. People don't know what BOLT.FUN is about. So we need to focus on community and proof of work because we celebrate progress and culture of freedom tech. Consistency is what we strive for, and for that we want to give out awards and support the makers who demonstrate this.

  2. Not everyone knows what Nostr is. Getting makers introduced to our social features that use Nostr early on since it is important for creating a sense of community and sharing knowledge.

  3. Makers should be able to choose to receive our Newsletter with insightful tips, milestones and highlights of community. Makers should be able to opt-in / personalise their notifications and be well informed about prizes, tournaments and new features.

  4. Not everyone fills out their maker profiles. To experience being a maker to the fullest, having filled out profile with your skills and roles opens opportunities for collaborations and recognition.

Plans 📆

  • Conduct usability testing. We are planning to test out wire frame prototype of redesigned onboarding experience. It is important to test out assumptions we create based on user needs and our system of values we want to represent.

  • Define research goals, identify problems and assumptions we have

  • Create pre-screening questions

  • Decide on specific tasks for testing

  • Prepare usability testing script (Notion)

  • Prepare outreach message

  • Schedule testing session with participants

  • Test design concept with clickable Figma prototypes

  • Write a script and short survey (ask 1-3 questions)

  • Interpret and recommend possible solutions based on testing transcripts (if sessions are recorded)

I am referencing UX Research Tool Kit from Bitcoin design. This article was very helpful in outlining my plans and cleared some of my blockages regarding next steps in this journey.

Progress ✅

  • In the past few weeks, I've attended Bitcoin design community calls, and got inspired to learn more about user experience research.

  • So far, I tested onboarding prototype with 2 of my coworkers and one founder. I understood that I needed to rephrase certain copy elements of UI for better context, and more conversational tone.

  • We discussed some guidelines regarding BOLT.FUN Nostr identity we provide for makers, as a custodial and easier solution for social features on BOLT.FUN (commenting system, bagdes)
