How do you define freedom-tech?

I quite like this term as I've been trying to avoid mentioning bitcoin in conversation as much as possible, especially to people who aren't in the community who have their own preconceptions and definitions of it. Freedom-tech also leaves space to include adjacent technologies that I'm interested in like Nostr, PGP, Tor, BitTorrent, P2P things, etc. but I have no idea how to formally define it.

Does freedom tech have to be open source? What if someone creates a closed sourced app for dissidents, or a closed sourced social network promoting freedom of speech... is the use case freedom tech?
