Pitch: Geyser Badges on Nostr๐Ÿ“›

Bitcoin funders don't feel properly recognized for their project contributions, and are unable to visibly display their support towards these projects. Nostr Badges fix this.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Context & User Research

Bitcoiners care a lot about bitcoin projects and initiatives, you can see this based on how much and how often they fund them on Geyser:

  • Around 15,000 individual donors in 6 months.

  • 500 individuals made more than 2 contributions

  • 400 individuals donated more than $100

We spoke with some of these contributors and we discovered some insights:

  • Contributors often identify strongly with some of these projects.

  • They want to visibly showcase that they are backers of the projects.

  • They want to reshare and re-mediate the projects so that others can discover these initiatives as well

They are looking for ways to "social signal" their interests and their community. This is prevalent on social media with users updating their Profile Pics with laser eyes, Ukrainian flags and hodlnout image, etc.

Example 1: No Good artist received most of his contributions by people who purchased his Nostr badge.

Example 2: Greenpeace PR campaigns backfires and over 1.4M sats of greenskull 'pins' get's sold in 1hour!

โŒ The problem

These insights highlighted the following issues that funders experience with Geyser and other crowdfunding platforms.

  1. Recognition: funders don't feel properly recognized for their contributions.

  2. Sharing & remediating: funders would like to visibly showcase and share and promote projects they care about.

๐Ÿ“› Current solutions

Badges and Checkmarks somewhat solve this issue of allowing users to identify. Current solutions like Facebook and GitHub badges and Twitter checkmarks tackle this to some extent. Their limitation is that they are โ€œcentralised badgesโ€, which means:

  • You don't really own them

  • Not interoperable across platforms

  • Creators cannot issue their own

๐ŸฆฉNostr fixes this

As a distributed social layer, Nostr offers the opportunity of recreating a decentralized social symbolic layer. With Nostr Badges:

  • Creators can issue their own badges

  • Contributors own their badges using pub-priv keys

  • Contributors can visibly display their badges across platforms

  • Platforms can reward contributors and creators for being active
