Design Challenge #1: Relay Management

Design Challenge #1: Relay management

Relays are at the core of the Nostr protocol. You can setup your own relay with your own rules. You can even requirement payment for relay use in return for providing improved performance etc. As Nostr grows the user experience of browsing, connect, and setting up relays will need to improve. How can make the experience of managing relays better?

How will my work impact the community?

Optimizing how we display relays can have a major impact on adoption and influence the work of designers and developers working on Nostr.

Why should I chose this design challenge?

Relays are the backbone of the Nostr protocol but there doesn’t yet exist best practices for organizing relays. This can be a barrier for those who are interested in using Nostr but lack the necessary skills.

Complexity

As Nostr scales there may be thousands of relay nodes distributed around the world. Presenting this information in a way that is easy to understand and navigate can be challenging.

Technical Jargon

The terminology associated with relays nodes can be difficult for non-technical users to understand.  A good design should use clear and simple language to explain what a relay is, what are the pros and con of connecting to multiple relays.

User goals

People using Nostr may have a variety of goals, including security, anonymity, and access to restricted content. How can we optimize the relay search, selection, and browsing experience to account for this variety of users?

What has the community said about relays?
