Crafting the Kumuly brand

Hi everyone,

After sharing our journey with you in the previous post, we have one more post about Kumuly in general that we'd like to present. Following this, our posts will focus completely on the Tournament and 'Kumuly Pocket'.

However, given the significant thought and effort we've invested in our branding over time, and because we believe it offers some enjoyable background insights, we're excited to share it with you. So here it is.

Bridging the Gap with Branding

At Kumuly, we believe that to achieve mainstream adoption, we need a brand that is loved and understood by Bitcoiners, but that can also speak to and educate no-coiners. With this in mind, we meticulously crafted a logo rich in meaning and established design elements that consistently reflect Kumuly's ethos across all our offerings, while staying appealing for the general public.

The Essence of Kumuly

  • The name: Kumuly is derived from the Spanish word “aCUMULar,” reflecting our mission to help individuals accumulate Bitcoin.

  • The logo: When thinking of creatures adept at accumulating for times of scarcity, the squirrel immediately comes to mind.
    Putting small stacks of nuts and fruits in plain sight to distract from their hidden main stash should definitely ring a bell with Bitcoiners.
    Moreover, considering their strong hands relative to their size would make them great hodlers.
    By having a logo that embodies a squirrel, we project that Bitcoin will keep adapting and surviving in different environments just as the squirrel navigates the various dangers from predators when searching for and storing food.

  • Other elements: Beyond the squirrel, our designs incorporate related elements like the acorn, berry, leaf, and seed. Notably, the berry is used for our Kumuly Pocket icon, drawing from its historical use in barter and aligning with our vision of a circular Bitcoin economy. This was not something we had previously envisioned to do, but using that icon just made sense when we were looking for a name and icon to participate in the Tournament.
    From now on, the other elements could also be used as icons for possible other apps in the future, the seed and acorn for apps related to on-chain transactions to represent longer term thinking or safer storage for example.

  • The slogan: Our slogan “Keep what’s yours” underscores our commitment across all our apps, we do not want to custody your funds nor hold your personal data, you can keep what’s yours.

Wearing Our Passion: Kumuly's Bitcoin-Inspired Apparel

Even with our basic brand elements in place, we occasionally channel our creative energy towards the brand and take a refreshing break from our technical endeavours.

One such creative diversion led us to design Bitcoin-themed shirts and sweaters. Rather than opting for the overt Bitcoin logo, we aimed for subtlety. We envisioned designs that could be worn by anyone, with Bitcoin enthusiasts instantly recognizing the references, while sparking curiosity in those unfamiliar with Bitcoin.

For example, one of our designs subtly introduces the concept of a UTXO. Under the motto "Spreading love and Bitcoin," it's the perfect gift for loved ones, signaling not just affection for them, but also a passion for Bitcoin. Of course, be prepared to explain what UTXOs are!


Another design subtly uses the hash of the first Bitcoin transaction made by Satoshi to construct one of the elements of Kumuly, the signature acorn combined with our slogan. This design not only showcases a deep appreciation for Bitcoin's origins but also serves as an intriguing conversation starter. It provides an opportunity to delve into the intricacies of hashes and share the profound message Satoshi embedded in that first transaction: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.'":

We did really produce these shirts and sweaters already and are happily wearing them ourselves. While we haven't set up a shop for them yet, it's on our to-do list. Ideally, we'd love to kick off sales through Kumuly Pocket, perhaps with an enticing discount as a special promotion 😜.

To make it clear, everything except for the icon of Kumuly Pocket and the meaning behind that, is unrelated to and was not created for the tournament. We just wanted to share what we stand for and how we represent that through our branding as some fun facts.
